Well, we have launched our Appeal, not only for a large amount of money but to put St John’s at the very heart of the Community.
It falls to us today to carry the torch and the burden of taking our two special Churches forward and handing them on to the next generation, not as quaint relics but as vibrant centres of worship and culture, buildings that have a special feel and where people are able to feel comfortable and at peace, but at the same time, ensuring that we make full use of our buildings to the greater glory of God. In the Middle Ages our Churches were the very hub of the community; they vibrated with life and excitement. It is only since the Reformation that the stultifying hand of the puritan has lain upon them, and it has lain too long. Yes, Churches must have space for peace but they must also be available to all, and my goodness what a waste of space if they only open on a Sunday. Fortunately for us we are open every day, so we have made a start. God isn’t just the God of Sunday!
