On Saturday evening 17th October in St John the Baptist's Church they will perform music written in 1671 but never published in its complete form until 24 years ago: the Swan Song, or Schwanengesang, by Heinrich Schutz; his last great 8-part double-choir work was his settings of Psalm 119, Psalm 100 and The Magnificat. Schutz was in his late 80s when he wrote this wonderful music, so Verdi wasn't the only composer to write masterpieces well into his old age.
The concert also includes the beautiful setting of the Mass by Monteverdi, an earlier composer, but if you love Baroque music generally this is the concert for you and, with its marvellous acoustic for St John's.
